This workshop focuses on creating detailed, complex characters that can surprise audiences, casts and even the actor playing the character. Strong characters that give the improviser greater creative freedom in order to achieve performances that are spontaneous, immediate and truthful.
The class begins with discovery; finding the characters inside of us who want to get out. How do these people hold and comport themselves. What are their mannerisms? How do I lock into the character so that I can recall them if needed.
We will work with characters in different environments to discover what elements of the character are retained, heightened or muted. We will see how they interact with their world and how that unveils the character to us.
The goal is to create characters that while being distinct and theatrical are also clearly defined and realistic. Characters can be huge and real. They can have one objective and still seem complex. These characters draw the audience in and make scenes work.
We will look at reactions and how each reaction must be based in an emotion, bias or judgment. How the subconscious of the character is exposed through body language, distance on stage from each other and movement.
We aim to have each student walk away with tools to utilize their creative impulses to discover strong, deeply feeling characters in the moment that draw the audience into the world revealing itself on stage.
